Hampi: A Great Place to Visit in the Vacation
Hampi a magnificent city of ruins is one of the famous heritage centres to visit for the tourists. It is one of the WORLD HERITAGE SITE refer to UNESCO. The, 26 sq. km. Hampi city is located in the state of Karnataka besides Tungabhadra river. To witness Indian art, architecture, heritage with natural beauty one must have to visit the “GROUP OF MONUMENT CITY”, Hampi. So if anyone planning a trip to the heritage site, there is some information about them which can guide them.
1) Virupaksha Temple - Virupaksha temple is one of the oldest temples in India. It was built by Lakamahadevi, the queen of Vikramaditya, in 7th century AD. This temple is located beside the southern bank of Tungabhadra river, dedicated to Lord Shiva. UNESCO has considered this temple as a world heritage site, as a part of Hampi group of monuments. Kailasanatha temple in Kanchipuram looks like Virupaksha temple on the basis of plan and elevation.
2) Achyutaraya Temple – One of the top attractions of Hampi, the Achyutaraya temple is the perfect example of Vijayanagar architecture style. The temple is situated between the Gandhamadana and Matanga hills in the Hampi. The glorious temple was built by Vijayanagara ruler Achyuta Deva Raya in 1534 AD. The temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara.
3) Vittala Temple Complex - The art and architecture of Vijayanagara can be shown in Vittala temple complex. It was built with Dravidian temple architecture style. The name ‘Vittala’ itself had a history. Vittala is a form of Lord Vishnu who was worshipped by local people.
4) Rock Climbing – Apart from the historical significance, Hampi is well known as a paradise for rock climbers. People from all over the world visit the place to experience the various opportunities in climbing.
5) Stone Doors – Every stone of Hampi carries a story. Stone doors located in the golden reign of Vijayanagara Empire in the northwest direction of Royal building. Stone doors are also an example of Dravidian architecture. It used in the entranceway of a royal building. These grey ruins are the replica of wooden doors but are made of stones. Many said doors were required elephants to open.
6) Coracle Crossing - Coracle is a huge traditional craft used to ferry people across the river. Hampi’s ferry was started five centuries back. From then to now there is nothing changed in ferry expect the manufacturing materials. There are three places from where people can ferry. Those are –
a) Ghats near the Virupaksha temple,
b) Ghats near the Kondaram temple,
c) Ghats near the Vittala temple.
The ferry near the Vittala temple is famous among them because it is the shortcut to reach Anegondi. Charges for coracle crossings are only 2 rupees per head.
7) Elephant Stables - From the name, we can understand it is the stable for elephant. It is used by royalty. It is an example of dilapidated structure. Total 11 domed chambers, tall and inter-connected, giving it a grand appearance. In the middle of it, a hall is located for gathering it include elephant processions. Its towers look like temples of that era.
8) Museum – The best way to know any place is to visit the museum of that place. Hampi has a museum too. So information can be derived from there also.
How to visit Hampi -
1) People can visit Hampi by air.
2) By railway, visit HOSPET then Hampi.
Best time to visit – October to January.
