Western Ghats Tourist Destinations in Karnataka: The Western Ghats are known as Sahyadri, Sahyan or Sehiyon is a mountain range that runs parallel to the western coast of the Indian peninsula, located entirely in India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity in the world.

Western Ghats Tourist Spots in Karnataka:

Madikeri:

Madikeri(Coorg) is located on the on the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Its rich flora and fauna have earned this place international recognition. Coorg has three wildlife sanctuaries and one national park: the Brahmagiri, Talakaveri, and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuaries, and the Nagarhole National Park, also known as the Rajiv Gandhi National Park. The fauna includes the Asian elephant, tiger, leopard, dhole, gaur, wild boar, and several species of deer. Kodagu also offers a wide variety of birds, roughly around 300 birds have been sighted and reported over the years.

Mullayanagiri:

Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka, India. Mullayyanagiri is located in the Chandra Dhrona Hill Ranges of the Western Ghats of Chikkamagaluru. Mullayanagiri is one of the best trekking places in Karnataka and South India.

Jog Falls and Sivasamudrum Falls:

Jog Falls is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India located near Sagara taluk, Shimoga district in the state of Karnataka. Jog Falls is created by the Sharavathi River. The Sivasamudram Falls is on the Kaveri River after the river has found its way through the rocks and ravines of the Deccan Plateau and drops off to form waterfalls. The island town of Sivasamudram divides the river into twin waterfalls. This creates the fourth largest island in the river's course. A group of ancient temples is located here and there likely was a village.

Bandipur National Park and Nagarhole National Park:

Bandipur National Park established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national park located in the south Indian state of Karnataka, which is the state with the highest tiger population in India. It is one of the premier Tiger Reserves in the country along with the adjoining Nagarhole national park.

Shimoga:

Dandeli:

Dandeli is a natural habitat for wildlife, including tigers, leopards, black panthers, elephants, gaur, deer, antelopes, and bears. It is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka and was designated as a tiger reserve in 2007. The jungle is also home to several varieties of reptiles and almost 300 varieties of birds. Dandeli resorts have become an attraction for wealthier, mobile residents from India and elsewhere. The biodiversity in the forest has attracted sufficient tourism to support a number of resorts in the vicinity of Dandeli. The government has promoted eco-tourism with proper planning of the healthy breeding of wild animals. The natural beauty of the area attracts tourists from other parts of India and abroad. It is an adventure sports destination and a white-water rafting destination in South India. It is one of the few locations where rafting is possible even during peak summer months of March to June.

Kukke:

Kukke lapped in the luxurious abundance of the beauty of the nature the village of Subramanya lies in the Sullia Taluk in Dakshina Kannada with a sanctity which very few places can boast of. This place is famous for Kukke Subramanya Temple. Overlooking the temple is the famous mountain of Kumara Parvatha, a popular hiking destination for trekkers from across South India. Kumara Parvatha forms a picture-perfect backdrop to the temple entrance and the Shesha Parvatha (a mountain shaped like a six-headed mythological serpent, adjacent to Kumara Parvatha) looks like a cobra with its open hood as if protecting the temple shrine of Lord Subramanya. The temple is situated on the western slopes of the Ghats and is covered with dense evergreen forests.

Karkala:

Karkala is one of the important tourist destinations of Karnataka state. Karkala is popular tourist spot because of the scenic beauty and natural & historical monuments. Karkala is full surrounded by black rocks and lush green forests. Jainism being a major religion makes Karkala a holy place in this religious community. Several Jain shrines dot the town of Karkala, the most famous of which are Chaturmukha Thirthankara Basadi, Hiriyangaddi Neminatha Basadi, and Anekere Padmavathi Basadi.

Kakkabe:

Situated amidst the beautiful Western Ghats, Kakkabe is a breathtaking village that lies in Coorg. It is about 35 km from Madikeri and can be easily reached via road. It is well known for the production of honey, which is the largest in quantity in South East Asia. The village is famous for the treks, it has a range of wildlife species and plants that dominate the rainforest. The rainforest is famous for species that include barking deer, flying squirrel, Pangolin and a wide range of birds. The best time to visit Kakkabe is from September to May. The ideal period for bird watchers is posting monsoons. The local temples celebrate festivals during the month of March and April.
